Windows Vista Review
July 20th 2008 05:43
I have had Vista Home Premium for 7 months now. I was a loyal XP user. That all changed (unfortunately) when I bought my new laptop. It came preinstalled with Vista.
Pros:
# pretty interface
# interesting/good security features
# Easy interface for those who have never used a computer before
# pretty good program-crash recovery
Cons:
# very slow, system resource hog
# tons of program/OS incompatabilities
# crashes at the slightest slow-down of a program
# easy to corrupt OS system files with regular use, requiring full system restore
# slow MS output of security updates/patches
# horrible layout of commonly used folders, programs
# Awful start menu layout
# does not provide easy changing of system configurations, even for experienced computer users - hard to find and implement certain changes of configs
# ridiculous User Access Control implementation
- guess it's supposed to be similar to linux permissions system
I'm sure there are tons more cons I can list but at the time I just don't feel like nitpicking, much. It took way too long for me to get the network up and running between my Vista and mom's XP machines. Luckily our printer is Vista compatible.
My suggestion is to request an XP downgrade when you are buying a new computer. If that is not possible, check online to buy XP on it's own. OR even better, buy a linux laptop or put linux on it as soon as you get the computer home.
To get more out of my system resources, I removed all of the pretty aero features and graphics properties. I stripped it down to the 'classic windows' view. Unfortunately the start menu is the same in layout.
I wish you luck for those of you experiencing what I have or are about to.
Do yourself a favor, avoid buying a computer that has Vista on it. In the end you certainly won't be happy with your computer's performance.
